How to sync JW Library notes between your devices
JW Library keeps notes separately on each device and does not sync them. To get the same notes everywhere, make a backup on every device, merge the backups into one with JWL Merger, and restore that one backup on every device.
Why your devices show different notes
Each copy of JW Library stores its own notes, highlights, bookmarks and tags. A note you write on your phone does not appear on your tablet or computer, and there is no sync setting to turn on.
1. Make a backup on every device
iPhone or iPad
- Open JW Library and go to Settings.
- Tap Backup and Restore, then Create a backup.
- Tap Save to Files, choose iCloud Drive, then tap Save.
Android
- Open JW Library and go to Settings.
- Tap Backup and Restore, then Create a backup.
- Choose where to send it: Google Drive, Files, or email it to yourself.
Windows PC
- Open JW Library and click Settings.
- Click Backup and Restore, then Create a backup.
- Save it somewhere easy to find, like Downloads or OneDrive.
Each backup is one file ending in .jwlibrary.
2. Merge them into one
- Open JWL Merger on any phone, tablet or computer. It runs in the browser, with nothing to install.
- Tap Tap to choose backups and pick all your backups at once.
- Tap Merge backups. A preview shows what each device will gain. Nothing is saved yet.
- Tap Save merged backup. You get one file with everything in it.
Notes and highlights that are on more than one device are kept once. If you edited the same note on two devices, the newest edit is kept, and you can review each one side by side.
3. Restore the merged backup on every device
- Get the backup file onto the device, for example with iCloud Drive, Google Drive, email or Beam-It.
- Open JW Library and go to Settings, Backup and Restore, Restore a backup.
- Choose the file and confirm.
- Open a few notes and highlights to check everything is there.
Important: restoring a backup replaces everything that is on that device. Keep your original backups until you have checked your notes.
Tip: restore on all your devices soon after merging, and don't add notes in between. Repeat the steps whenever your devices get out of step, for example once a week.
Try it with your own backups
JWL Merger is free, works in your browser, and never uploads your backups.
Questions
Does JW Library have a sync option?
No. JW Library does not sync personal study data between devices. Backing up, merging and restoring is the way to get the same notes everywhere.
Will I get duplicate notes?
No. JWL Merger keeps items that are on several devices once, including notes typed twice and identical highlights.
How often should I do this?
Whenever your devices get out of step. Many people do it once a week, or before a meeting or assembly.
