How to move JW Library notes to a new phone
Make a backup in JW Library on your old phone and restore it on the new one. If you have already added notes on the new phone, merge both backups with JWL Merger first, so nothing on either phone is lost.
1. Make a backup on your old phone
iPhone or iPad
- Open JW Library and go to Settings.
- Tap Backup and Restore, then Create a backup.
- Tap Save to Files, choose iCloud Drive, then tap Save.
Android
- Open JW Library and go to Settings.
- Tap Backup and Restore, then Create a backup.
- Choose where to send it: Google Drive, Files, or email it to yourself.
Windows PC
- Open JW Library and click Settings.
- Click Backup and Restore, then Create a backup.
- Save it somewhere easy to find, like Downloads or OneDrive.
Each backup is one file ending in .jwlibrary.
2. Is the new phone still empty?
If you have not written any notes or highlights in JW Library on the new phone yet, you only need the old backup. Go straight to step 4.
If you have already used JW Library on the new phone, make a backup there too. Restoring the old backup on its own would replace the notes on the new phone.
3. Merge the two backups
- Open JWL Merger on any phone, tablet or computer. It runs in the browser, with nothing to install.
- Tap Tap to choose backups and pick all your backups at once.
- Tap Merge backups. A preview shows what each device will gain. Nothing is saved yet.
- Tap Save merged backup. You get one file with everything in it.
4. Restore it on the new phone
- Get the backup file onto the device, for example with iCloud Drive, Google Drive, email or Beam-It.
- Open JW Library and go to Settings, Backup and Restore, Restore a backup.
- Choose the file and confirm.
- Open a few notes and highlights to check everything is there.
Important: restoring a backup replaces everything that is on that device. Keep your original backups until you have checked your notes.
Try it with your own backups
JWL Merger is free, works in your browser, and never uploads your backups.
Questions
Can I move notes from iPhone to Android?
Yes. A JW Library backup works on iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows. Send the file to the new phone with Google Drive, email or Beam-It and restore it there.
Are downloaded publications and videos moved too?
No. Backups contain your personal study data: notes, highlights, bookmarks, tags, favorites, filled-in answers and playlists. Download publications and videos again on the new phone.
Do I need to keep my old phone?
Keep the old phone, or at least its backup file, until you have checked that your notes are on the new phone.
