Move JW Library notes between iPhone, Android and Windows

Updated 30 September 2026

Quick answer

A JW Library backup is the same kind of file on iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows. Make a backup on the old device, send the file to the other one, and restore it there. If both devices already have notes, merge the two backups first.

1. Make a backup

iPhone or iPad

  1. Open JW Library and go to Settings.
  2. Tap Backup and Restore, then Create a backup.
  3. Tap Save to Files, choose iCloud Drive, then tap Save.

Android

  1. Open JW Library and go to Settings.
  2. Tap Backup and Restore, then Create a backup.
  3. Choose where to send it: Google Drive, Files, or email it to yourself.

Windows PC

  1. Open JW Library and click Settings.
  2. Click Backup and Restore, then Create a backup.
  3. Save it somewhere easy to find, like Downloads or OneDrive.

Each backup is one file ending in .jwlibrary.

2. Send the file to the other device

The backup is one .jwlibrary file. Moving it between systems is where most people get stuck, because iCloud Drive and Google Drive don't open easily on the other system's phone. These work on any device:

  • Email the file to yourself and open the email on the other device.
  • Google Drive or OneDrive: install the app on both devices.
  • Beam-It: open beamfiles.vercel.app on both devices and send the file directly.
  • WhatsApp: send it to yourself as a document.

3. Combine them if both devices have notes

Restoring a backup replaces what is on that device. If the other device already has notes you want to keep, make a backup there too and merge both with JWL Merger.

  1. Open JWL Merger on any phone, tablet or computer. It runs in the browser, with nothing to install.
  2. Tap Tap to choose backups and pick all your backups at once.
  3. Tap Merge backups. A preview shows what each device will gain. Nothing is saved yet.
  4. Tap Save merged backup. You get one file with everything in it.

4. Restore it

  1. Get the backup file onto the device, for example with iCloud Drive, Google Drive, email or Beam-It.
  2. Open JW Library and go to Settings, Backup and Restore, Restore a backup.
  3. Choose the file and confirm.
  4. Open a few notes and highlights to check everything is there.

Important: restoring a backup replaces everything that is on that device. Keep your original backups until you have checked your notes.

Try it with your own backups

JWL Merger is free, works in your browser, and never uploads your backups.

Questions

Does a backup from iPhone work on Android?

Yes. JW Library uses the same backup format on iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows.

Can I do the merge on my PC?

Yes. JWL Merger works in any web browser, so you can merge on a computer and then send the merged backup to your phones.

The file will not open on my phone. What can I do?

Open JW Library first and use Settings, Backup and Restore, Restore a backup, then choose the file from where you saved it, instead of tapping the file itself.
