JWL Merger

Combine the notes, highlights, bookmarks and tags from your iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac or PC into one JW Library backup.

Every backup you have — old and new, from every device — in one restore file

Add all your JW Library backups at once: today’s, last year’s, and the ones from your old phone. JWL Merger gathers the personal study data from each of them into a single backup you restore once. You’ll be amazed how much comes back.

STEP 1Add a backup from each device

In JW Library on each device: Settings → Backup and Restore → Create a backup, save it to iCloud Drive or Files, then add them here.

Show me how, step by step

Before you start: update JW Library on every device, and decide which device you'll merge on — any phone, tablet or computer with a web browser.

iPhone or iPad

  1. Open JW Library and go to Settings.
  2. Tap Backup and Restore → Create a backup.
  3. In the menu that opens, tap Save to Files, choose iCloud Drive, then tap Save. (Or AirDrop it straight to the device you'll merge on.)

Android

  1. Open JW Library and go to Settings.
  2. Tap Backup and Restore → Create a backup.
  3. Choose where to send it — Google Drive, Files, or email/WhatsApp it to yourself.

Windows PC

  1. Open JW Library and click Settings.
  2. Click Backup and Restore → Create a backup.
  3. Save it somewhere easy to find, like Downloads or OneDrive.

Put all the backups on one device

Move every backup to the device you'll merge on — with iCloud Drive, OneDrive, Google Drive, AirDrop, an email to yourself, or Beam. Each file ends in .jwlibrary.

Add them to JWL Merger

Tap Tap to choose backups and pick all of them at once. On iPhone or iPad, tap Browse, find the files, tap Select and choose them. On a computer you can also drag them onto the box. Each backup shows how many notes, highlights and bookmarks it has, so you can check you've got the right ones. Tap Remove to take one out.

Before you choose: make a fresh backup today on every device you use JW Library on — phone, tablet and computer — then add them all here. You can also add any older backups you want to bring back, even ones from years ago.

STEP 2Merge

Items on more than one device are kept once. If the same note was edited on two devices, the newest edit wins — or you choose.

Show me how, step by step
  1. Tap Merge backups. It takes a few seconds — up to a minute for very large libraries.
  2. A table shows each backup and the Merged result. The merged numbers are usually at least as high as your biggest backup.

What the merge does

  • Notes, highlights, bookmarks, tags, filled-in answers and playlists from every backup are combined.
  • Anything that's on more than one device is kept once.
  • If you edited the same note on two devices, the newest edit is picked — after merging you can review each one, choose the other version, or keep both.
  • If two devices used the same bookmark slot, one moves to a free slot, so none is lost.
  • Duplicate audio and video in playlists are removed.
  • Notes with the same text in the same place (for example typed on two devices) are kept once.
  • Identical highlights (same words, same colour) are kept once. Tick Also combine overlapping highlights of the same colour to join highlights whose words overlap into one.
  • Under Choose what to merge you can leave out notes, highlights, bookmarks, tags, favorites, filled-in answers or playlists. The backup from the newest JW Library keeps everything it already has.
  • Before saving, it checks that every note and highlight is still there. If anything would be lost, nothing is saved.

Downloaded publications, videos and audio aren't part of backups — each device keeps its own downloads.

Questions & answers

Does JW Library sync notes between devices?

No. JW Library keeps your notes, highlights and bookmarks separately on each device. To get the same ones everywhere, make a backup on each device, merge them here into one, and restore that one backup on every device.

How do I move my notes to a new phone, or from iPhone to PC?

Make a backup on the old device and on the new one, add both here and tap Merge backups. Restore the merged backup on the new device — nothing that was already on it is lost. If you only have one backup, you can also restore it directly in JW Library.

Is it safe? Are my notes uploaded?

Your backups are opened and merged on your own device, in your browser — they are never uploaded (except a locked copy if you choose Send with a QR code, deleted after 1 hour). Before saving, JWL Merger checks that every note and highlight from every backup is included, and saves nothing if a check fails.

Does it cost anything? Do I need to install it?

It’s free, with no account. It works in any web browser on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac or Windows. There’s also an offline Windows version and a Mac app.

What if I edited the same note on two devices?

The newest edit is kept. After merging you can review each one side by side, choose the other version, or keep both as separate notes.

Can I undo a merge?

Yes. Keep your original backups until you’ve checked your notes. JWL Merger can also keep the originals on this device for 7 days, so you can restore one of them if something isn’t right.
